3 men rob PUJ passengers; 1 later nabbed
THREE robbers, one of them armed with a caliber .38 revolver, held up a southbound jeepney and carted away the valuables of the passengers past 6 p.m. last night.
Bad luck, however, came upon the robbers as one of them was arrested by elements of the Mobile Patrol Group (MPG) who happened to pass by Magallanes St. near Forbes Bridge while conducting a preventive patrol.
Arrested by the police was Erwin A. Miralles, 21, of Barangay Ermita, Cebu City. He was arrested in possession of the revolver loaded with three rounds of ammunition.
Also recovered from Miralles was the Sony Ericsson cellular phone worth P3,500 that was taken from 25-year-old passenger Cristina Surigao.
PO1 Rosaleo Santillan, desk officer of the Carbon Police Station, in an interview with Sun.Star Cebu, described Miralles as a known hold-upper in the Carbon area.
Initial investigation conducted by Santillan showed that passengers Cristina together with her brother Arnold, 21, and Geraldine Ang, 38, were on board the jeepney, not knowing that the three other people on board the vehicle were robbers.
When the jeepney reached Magallanes St., the robbery suspects declared a holdup and ordered all the passengers to turn over their valuables.
Arnold lost his Nokia 6610 worth P2,500 and Chinese gold necklace worth P2,500 while Ang lost her Italian silver necklace worth P2,500.
The robbers also took Cristina’s cellular phone.
As the robbers were about to disembark, MPG policemen composed of PO1s Mark Bitoño, Bernardo Balo, Ruel Bacal and Roger Peralta noted the commotion and heard the shout from the passengers.
After a brief chase, police arrested Miralles. The two other suspects, though, managed to flee. (JST)
