Sunday, August 19, 2007 ‘Volcano’ fiery in round 3
WORLD 9-Ball and 8-Ball champion Ronato “Volcano” Alcano found himself in dire straits, but managed to sneak through the hole and survived with a 9-6 win over Ignacio Chavez to lead two other Filipino cue masters to the third round of the 2007 Turning Stone Classic 9-Ball Open Tournament at the Turning Stone Casino in Verona, New York in the US.
Alcano needed to dig deep into his bag of tricks to repulse the red hot Chavez, but in the end, Alcano’s poise and steady hands were fiery enough to win the match.
The Volcano will have to be extra careful in his third-round match as he faces an unpredictable Dick Capotto who dismissed Jose “Amang” Parica to the 1-loss bracket.
Easy game
Alcano’s teammate at the star-studded Bugsy Stable Dennis “Robocop” Orcollo, meanwhile, did not find Canada-based Filipino Al Lapena as a serious problem as the 2007 BCA Enjoypool.com 9-ball champion cruised easily into the third round to face Dennis Hatch.
Hatch, however, is not an easy prey as he easily defeated former world champion Mika Immonen of Finland, 9-2, in the second round.
Another Pinoy, Lee Van “The Slayer” Corteza, will also see action in the third round after wiping Holden Chin out of the way with a 9-1 win.
Corteza will play Mike Dechaine in the third round and is on collision course with the other tournament big gun Tony Chohan who will play Ed Abraham in the third round.
At the Losers’ bracket, Parica will need to be more precise this time starting with Ivaylo Petrov if he wants to stay in contention for the $12,000 top prize.
Lapena, on the other hand, will need to get past Eric Hjorliefson in order to move on. (RCM)
