Sunday, August 19, 2007 Springdale beats ANS in San Roque B17 finals
THREE teams got their titles after a little bit of luck as shootouts dominated the first day of the Pepsi Presents San Roque Football Fiesta at the San Roque Parish football grounds yesterday.
Paref-Springdale took home the Boys 17 crown after beating Abellana National School (ANS), while Guissepe and Sacred Heart School ruled the Girls 12 and Girls 17 categories respectively with San Roque Football Club finishing second in both contests.
In the Players 6 division, Bright Academy took the crown with San Roque Royal United finishing second. The results in the other divisions were not available at press time yesterday.
Gritty
In the Boys 17 semifinals, Springdale outlasted a gritty Pajo National School team, 2-0, with goals from Myles Chu and Miguel Arriola, while ANS, coached by Francis Ramirez survived a shootout with the University of San Carlos, 3-2.
During the finals, Springdale was on the offensive for most of the time but their erratic shooting kept the score 0-0.
The team, coached by Mario Ceniza, also failed to convert on their three corners in their first seven minutes as they kept ANS on the defensive for most of the first half.
Springdale keeper Paolo Pascual flirted with disaster after his goal kick was intercepted but was saved after the resulting shot sailed wide.
The team could have won the game in regulation but they failed to score despite getting three corners and a kickin in the final two minutes.
Miscues
The miscues continued in the shootout with ANS first two kickers missing wide before TJ Matteo, who was named the MVP, converted his for a 1-0 score.
In the Girls 12 Division, Guiseppe defeated San Roque FC, 4-3, to take the crown, while Sacred Heart defeated San Roque, 3-2, to win the Girls 17 title.
Goalkeepers Phoebe Smith got the MVP for Guiseppe while Julian Canoy was named the MVP in the Girls 17.
