Tuesday, August 21, 2007 Salazar humbles Isle of Man, 14-1, a short cut to semis
THE outcome came as expected, the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology avenged its elimination loss by handing neophyte squad Isle Of Man its first defeat, 14-1, in the semifinal round of the 2007 Cebu Association of Batted Sports (Cabs)-Commissioner Rolly Diorico Softball Cup at the Basak National High School grounds last Sunday.
Scoreless in the first inning, SCSIT used its championship experience as it came roaring in the second inning scoring nine runs with Serfico Tabar and Zaldy Bacarisas scoring two runs each while Genaro Macayan, Jackson Genolaga, Abrine Pautan, John Magno and Sherwin Tabares adding one run each to lead 9-0.
Pressure
IOM’s playing assistant manager Alintone Adolfo scored a lone run at the bottom of the second as SCSIT pitcher Sherwin Fernandez did his wonders, while his counterpart Er Egloria succumbed to pressures.
Russel Cabrera made it 10-1 at the top of the third inning and SCSIT then eked out another run from Tabar, Bacarisas, Pautan and Magno in the fourth.
With IOM failing to score in its turn at bat in the fourth, the game was called off because of the mercy rule.
SCSIT gained the automatic seat to the knockout championship game next Sunday, while IOM, the top seed during the elimination round will have to play against Aldritz Pau Liniment. Aldritz also pulled a masterful win over No.4 seed Pusok All-Stars, for the second championship slot.
Pusok catcher Rey Parpan scored on an run-batted-in (RBI) hit of Jose Oyao in the first but failed to score on the next five innings with Aldritz Pau’s pitcher Junior Dignos making life hard for the Pusok batters.
Marlon Cabrera, Rico Ylaya, Leo Tabares, Dopie de la Cerna, Leo Caballero, Zardo Custodio and Alex Sandal completed their runs for a 7-1 lead as Pusok committed many catching errors.
Cabrera and Ylaya scored another run each at the bottom of the sixth inning as the game was called off.
Close fight
In the Seniors’ B Division, San Vicente Padres booked a championship seat after beating Angeric of Paknaan 6-4.
The game was closely fought in the first two innings but the Padres pulled four runs in the third to lead 5-1.
Angeric tried to bounce back with Joel Soco hitting a home run at the bottom of the seventh inning to carry Felix Senerpida and Bobby Soco to the home base.
But Padres pitcher Manuel Bacarisas Sr. did not allow another run for Angeric as he struck out the next two batters to book the first championship slot.
Angeric, however, still has another chance to make it to the championship round if they can beat the Masong Brothers on Sunday.
The Masong Brothers stayed in contention for the championship seat after beating the inexperienced Abellana National School, 12-5. (RCM)
