Wednesday, August 22, 2007 Calderon earns trip to ROK World Cup
A RECORD-breaking feat and a ticket to Italy. Talk about hitting two birds with one stone.
Ten-year-old Emmanuel Jette Calderon banked on his impressive runs in all three laps to win the championship in the fourth leg of the Mini ROK division of the 2007 Super Karting Series at the Kartzone last Sunday.
That Sunday proved to be lucky for Calderon, who broke a Kartzone record when he registered the fastest lap time of 27.96 seconds, which according to his mom Janette, is a new record in Kartzone.
This impressive finish eventually allowed Calderon to win the race over perennial nemesis Tonio Carcel, who settled for second and to win the slot for the RP team that will compete in the 2007 ROK World Cup Championships this October in Italy.
His win last Sunday gave him a better edge over Carcel for the top spot in the drivers’ overall standing. JT Gullas and Kali Carcel finished in the next two places.
In order for him to win over Tonio, he needed not just to win one but all three heats. He now sports 136 points accumulated from the other legs, while Carcel is at second with 131.
The race last Sunday was crucial for the Cebuano racers as it also was the qualifying that will determine who will represent the Philippines in the October race at the famous race track of South Garda Lonato, Italy.
Earning the slot did not come easy for Calderon.
“His unwavering determination and his skills were the factors for his win,” said proud mom Janette. (MCB)
