Thursday, August 23, 2007 DTI, City Hall hold contest
TO develop the entrepreneurial and innovative skills of students, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Cebu City Government will set aside P600,000 to hold a product design and business plan contest.
The contest will be participated in by local colleges and universities.
Elias Tecson, head of program management division, said the DTI got a subsidy for the project from the One Town, One Product (Otop) fund.
He said a portion of the fund has already been set aside for the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo 2007, which is a semester-long program.
Tecson said, though, that the DTI and City Hall still need to raise more funds for the awards and prizes, which will include best business plan, best product design, top seller and best dressed booth, among others.
The project was conceptualized by Tecson and is spearheaded by Cebu City’s Small and Medium Enterprise Development Council and the City Department of Manpower Development and Placement.
The DTI said the project is designed to encourage a sense of entrepreneurship among students so “they can effectively and positively contribute to (Cebu’s) economic growth and development.”
It also seeks to develop the artistic skills of students to resolve the lack of local designers in Cebu City.
He said the contest will serve as “practical training” for the students.
The contest will culminate on Nov. 16, 17 and 18 this year.
Eight colleges and universities will participate in the project, said Tecson. (TEP)
