Thursday, August 23, 2007 Blue Marlins join Silliman event
THIRTY Cebuano tankers will take part in the 106th Siliman University Founders Day Age Group Swimming Competitions today at the Shaw Memorial swimming facilities in Dumaguete City.
The team, bannered by the University of Cebu-Cebu Blue Marlins (UC-CBM) club has gone back into competing in this tournament after boycotting it for seven years.
Head coach Rolando Alvarez alleged that too much politicking in the past clouded the supposed friendly intentions of the competition. Their participation this year will be like testing the waters for UC-CBM.
“If the atmosphere is still the same, we won’t be joining again,” said Alvarez.
Alvarez said that he is bringing with him 30 swimmers competing in different age groups that could boost the chances of Cebu making it to at least the top three in the over all standing.
The team’s bid will be spearheaded by triathlete Eldy Banluta, who will be competing in the men’s 18-29 years old division.
He will be joined by Marlon Galo and Todd Aris Belleza. Multi-titled Diane Cañeda leads the charge in the distaff side with Beverly Vasig.
Also expected to draw titles for the team are Paula Abigail Vega, Noel Caneda, Jeffrey Yana and Michael David Vega and Mary Arlette Baller.
The other swimmers competing in their respective age groups are Renan Tapang, Karen Indaya, Lyh Ann Navarrop, Anthony Linn Navarro, Isrel David, Serge Patrick Biscocho and Nicolas James Chiong, Bethmay Arellano, Danielle Mae Ballesteros, Trina Cañeda Patricia Mae Baguio, Pierre Nino Baguio and Waren Troy Vergara.
