Southwoods takes WGAP early lead

SOUTHWOODS edged out defending champion Del Monte to pace the leaderboard after the first round of the 2007 Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines Luzvimin Invitational contest yesterday at the Cebu Country Club.

Southwoods’ top four scorers collaborated for 193 points after the first 18 holes to lead the Diamond Division.

Southwoods is paced by Regine de Guzman, who finished with a day’s best of 54 after the first round. The other top scorers for Southwoods are Lora Roberto, Carmelette Villaroman and Beachie Abiera. Claire Ong and Sandy Velhagen complete team Southwood’s roster.

Only the top four scores of each team will be counted in each round of the three-round contest.

Del Monte, on the other hand, is not far behind with a 191, behind the efforts of Lovelyn Guioguio, Marian Woo, Kristine Leomen and Eva Miñoza.

Jungolfer Guioguio scored an impressive 53 in the first round, while Woo tallied 48 for the defending champion.

Host team Cebu Country Club on, the other hand, is currently at third with a 180 collected from the outputs of Stephanie Olea, Kathleen Uy, Hannah Wong and Ada Martinez.

Olea tallied the third-best score in the division in the first round, 50, to lead her team while Uy had a 48.

Top five

Camp Aguinaldo, which has a 175, and Forest Hills with 158 currently make the top five.

The rankings could still be shaken as there are two more rounds coming up. The fight is especially close in the Ruby Division, where only three points separate the top three teams.

Aileen Chua, Gabby Montfort, Maite Ilustre and Queenie Bautista paced Negros to take the temporary lead of the Ruby division with 158 points.

Sta. Elena of Rio Co, Nancy Ortega, Fely Lopez and Angie Co are at Negros’ heels with 157, while current third placer Pamplona of Gigi Frokjear, Farah de Asis, Amanda Vicente and Ana Montenegro has 156.

Both Co and Chua tallied the division best of 46 in the first round.

Meanwhile, Alabang topped the Pearl Division in the first day, holding a three-point lead over second placer Wack-Wack.

Alabang tallied 138, buoyed by a pair of 39s from Carol Nielsen and Videlyn Torralba, while Gina Tuason and Olive Pizarro had 32 and 28, respectively.

Best

Claudette Santiago led Wack-Wack with a division best 43, while So Han Uy had a 34. Dolly Aguino and Mai Cu had 31 and 29, respectively, for the second placers.

Club Filipino’s Lucille Colina, Jeanette Chiu, Eva Hino, Remy Perez and Flor Estreegan are currently at third place, while Manila Golf and Baguio Country Club are in the fourth and fifth places. (MCB)
