Friday, August 24, 2007 Del Monte strikes back, takes WGAP lead
LOVELYN Guioguio came out with a spectacular second round to tow the defending champion Del Monte Golf and Country Club to the top of the Diamond division after the second day of the 2007 Women’s Golf Association of the Philippines Luzvimin Invitational Tournament at the Cebu Country Club (CCC) yesterday.
Guioguio had a blistering second round with six birdies and 11 pars to score a day’s best of 59 points for Del Monte’s impressive 205 in the second round.
Eva Miñoza also had 52 points, while Kristine Leonen and Marian Woo had 48 and 46 respectively for Del Monte.
So strong was their second round run that even if first day leader, Southwoods, improved their first round total by three points, Del Monte still ended up ahead by seven points.
Southwoods tallied 196 yesterday, led by Lora Roberto’s 53, for a two-day haul of 389. After tallying 54 in Day One, Regine de Guzman had a quite 49 in the second day while Beachie Abiera and Carmelette Villaroman had a pair of 47 points.
Meanwhile, Kathleen Uy and Hannah Wong kept CCC at third with 371 after yesterday’s 191. Uy also had an impressive round with three birdies and 13 pars for a round of 55, while Wong carded a 47.
After anchoring their first round haul with a 50, Stephanie Olea scored a 45 yesterday, while Kristine Uy got a 44.
With only one round left, only a disaster can dislodge CCC at third as Camp Aguinaldo is at a distant fourth with 345.
The battle for the crown will be only between Del Monte and Southwoods.
Solid play
In the Ruby Division, the Negros Team solidified its hold of the top spot as it now upped its total to 316 after tallying another round of 158.
Still, Maite Ilustre, Aileen Chua, Gabby Montfort and Queenie Bautista of Negros need to keep their play solid today as Sta. Elena trails at second, just three points shy.
Riviera, with Tami Leung, Nancy Ortiga, Rio and Angie Go, is at third with 313 after yesterday’s 156.
Meanwhile, it’s all but over in the Pearl Division after Alabang pulled away at the top with a blistering 151 in the second day. Alabang, led by Carol Neilsen’s 39, now has a comfortable 23-point cushion over Club Filipino after upping their haul to 289.
Club Filipino banked on a pair of 36s from Eva Hino and Jeanette Chiu in the second round, while Lucille Colina and Remy Perez had 34 and 28, respectively. (MCB)
