Monday, August 27, 2007 Costanilla: Fun-filled day By Sam Costanilla spotlight
THE FIRST induction ceremonies of the Cebu United Radio and TV Artists Corporation (CurtaCorp) at the San Miguel Corporation’s 1521 Center in Mandaue City was a tremendous success, thanks to the big help extended by corporate communications officer Girlie Garces and her energetic staff. It began with a Holy Mass celebrated by Msgr. Joe Tajanlangit, the club’s spiritual adviser and one of its consultants. After dinner. Club vice president Edgar Gutierrez of dyAB delivered the welcome address, followed by the oath-taking ceremonies. The members of the board of trustees were sworn into office by Rep. Raul del Mar, the panel of consultants by Vice Gov. Greg Sanchez Jr. and the executive officers by Rep. Pablo Garcia. They each delivered inspiring messages after administering our respective oath of office.

VETERAN radio drama writer-director-talent Cora Rosales Jayma and yours truly had a grand time emceeing the five-hour program. When retired, semi-retired, and active radio and television dramatists converge, it’s a riot, a fun-filled gathering. These entertainers never run out of colorful anecdotes, jokes and ad lib. Of course, there were delightful impromptu numbers that some CurtaCorp officers and members did. Baby Condeno, Dr. Warfe Engracia, Dante Luzon, Ester Alferez and Jayma sang some standard hits with this writer accompany ing them on the piano. Joe Dakay and Nonoy Tabar did some novelty numbers, proving to one and all that they are a comic duo to beat. Susan Alino of GMA 7 brought the house down with her very funny comments about her fellow dramatists; while Ma’am Ginny Vamenta, who still has that golden voice, delivered an enlightening talk on Cebu radio.

THERE were cash prizes as well as gift packs as raffle items. In his acceptance speech, veteran drama director Tatay Emil Rizada Jr. (remember Sebyo, Ang Batang Kahibulongan?) promised to do his best to lead CurtaCorp to where it should go even as he challenged its members to help achieve its noble goals. He and Nanay Rose were so happy because their US-based daughters attended the program, which segued to his birthday at the strike of midnight.

WE are aware that there are challenges that our club has to face in the years ahead. We welcome them because they keep the club alive. We, in CurtaCorp, have vowed not to emulate similar clubs that only become active while preparing for their induction rites. We know that under Tatay Emil’s leadership, CurtaCorp would surely soar to greater heights.

THIS aging businesswoman here, whose husband is her own first-degree cousin, had a romantic liaison with another relative—also a first-degree cousin—when the first guy was out of the country to work. She has also earned the tag Madam Principal because of her looks and the way she dresses up.
