Boy, 15, killed after gas barrel erupts in flames

A FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD boy died last Friday while his father and six-year-old brother suffered burns after a barrel of gasoline caught fire in Barangay Dakit, Sogod, Cebu.

Junel Songakid had burns all over his body and was in critical condition when he reached the Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center (VSMMC) in Cebu City.

Junel and his brother Jimboy were near the barrel of gasoline while their father Joel was cooking in preparation for the barangay fiesta Saturday morning.

A report over radio dyDD quoted one PO3 Elmer Mendoza as saying that the boys were playing about when they knocked over the barrel.

The spilled gasoline went straight to the fire their father had made.

However, the record at the VSMMC emergency room logbook stated that the boys were asked by Barangay Councilor William Brigoli, their father’s employer, to get the barrel of gasoline from a vehicle, when they accidentally spilled its contents.

The gasoline caught fire and engulfed Junel in flames.

Junel suffered burns all over his body while Jimboy’s feet were injured.

Joel, who pulled his sons out of the flames, also suffered burns on his feet.

The three were taken to the Juan Dosado Memorial Hospital in Sogod proper before they were transferred to the VSMMC in Cebu City.

Joel and Jimboy were released from the hospital because their burns were considered minor.

Only Junel was admitted, but he died a few hours after he arrived in hospital. (MEA)
