THE Isle Of Man (IOM) Sluggers took home their first championship trophy in their rookie year after beating the title favorite Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology (SCSIT) 3-2 in the final game of the 2007 Cebu Association of Batted Sports-Commissioner Rolly Diorico Softball Cup held at the Basak National High School yesterday.
Meanwhile, it wasn’t a close fight in the Seniors B Division as the San Vicente Padres dominated the Masong Brothers, 14-2.
The IOM Sluggers, the elimination round top seed, labored its way for the second championship seat as they had to endure against the veteran-laden Aldritz Pau D’ Arco in the morning.
After a scoreless three innings, the Sluggers found their rhythm at the top of the fourth and scored six runs for a 6-0 lead.
Aldritz Pau was able to score its lone run at the bottom of the fifth courtesy of Felix Custodio.
Aldritz Pau settled for the second runnerup honors, while the Pusok All-Stars finished third runner-up.
IOM catcher Carrywhite de la Cerna scored the seventh run at the top of the six to ensure the team’s progression to the championship round.
Despite getting tired and shaky, IOM managed to hold two SCSIT runners in the first inning as assistant team manager Alintone Adolfo scored the Sluggers’ first run at the bottom of the second inning.

Adolfo also hit a homer in the fourth that put IOM ahead 2-0 and Allen Diñola made it 3-0 off Sandy Lasila’s RBI after the fifth inning.
Zaldy Bacarisas scored the first run for SCSIT at the bottom of the sixth following a low pitch by the Sluggers’ pitcher Er Igloria that went past the mitts of de la Cerna.
Koko Pautan added one more at the run for SCSIT at the top of the seventh inning and they were on the way to tie the game after Genaro Macayan reached third with Bacarisas at bat.
However, Igloria forced Bacarisas for a grounder that was easily caught by the pitcher and an easy toss to first base took out the runner.
With his outstanding performance all tournament long, de la Cerna was chosen as the Most Valuable Player (MVP) in the Seniors A Division, while Jonathan Tabares took the MVP plum for the Seniors B class.
Angeric ended up as the second runnerup in Seniors’ B and Abellana National School wounded up at the third runnerup in the tournament.
