Tuesday, August 28, 2007 Gejon on pace to make weight for title fight
WORLD title challenger Eriberto “Ioka” Gejon is on schedule as he successfully passed the required five-day pre-fight weight imposed by the World Boxing Association for the WBA minimum weight championship fight on Sept. 1 at the Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan.
According to trainer Brix Flores, Gejon was just a bit over the 105-lb. limit and will surely tip the required weight on Friday, which will be the official weigh-in.
Japanese champion Yutaka Niida is also at the same weight range with Gejon.
“No problem with the weight. Gejon is on schedule and by Friday he will be at 105 pounds,” Flores told Sun.Star Cebu in a long distance call from Japan.
Last Saturday, Gejon sparred against WBA No.9 contender Teruo Misawa and displayed his sharpness for two rounds.
“Gejon was sharp. His punches were crisp but of course he is not showing all that he got, but it’s so nice to see him with that kind of attitude,” Flores added.
Gejon and Flores left for Japan last Friday for the press conference and for the public sparring sessions.
Since his defeat to Niida two years ago, Gejon is all psyched up to bring home the belt which was denied to him when he lost by a technical decision when he got a nasty cut on his left eye.
“It’s another chance and I won’t waste it. I am given this chance again where only few had. This time I am going for a knockout and not just win the fight. I will try very hard to bring home the title,” Gejon told Sun.Star Cebu before he left for Japan.
Flores has assured that his boxer is on tip-top shape and on top of his conditions.
“No injuries this time. He is well motivated and I pray that God will be on our side this Saturday,” Flores said. (RCM)
