CELEBRATED American trainer Fred-die Roach was dismayed when he saw too many people inside the RWS International gym as Manny Pacquiao entered the third week of preparations for the much-anticipated rematch against Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera in Mandalay Bay Hotel and Resort Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada on Oct. 6.
Roach, who asked for complete privacy, was frustrated to see too many people waiting in the gym to watch Pacquiao spar with Mexicans Raymundo Beltran Jr. and David Rodela yesterday, and warned to take the training back to the Wildcard Gym if there will be no upturn to his request.
“(I’m) disappointed. I know that these people love Manny but all I just wanted is that we could get some privacy and for him to focus (on the fight strategy) because we really wanted Manny to win this fight. I hope they would understand that,” Roach said after the sparring sessions.
“Still a lot of people keep coming to the gym. This is not the way we’re getting ready for this fight. If I have the opportunity, I will take Manny back to the US to train there,” Roach added.
Roach had imposed a no-video-taking policy but yesterday, it was ignored by some, which angered the 2006 BWAA Trainer of the Year more.
“They don’t respect my decisions. I have nothing to do about it,” Roach said.
Most were from out of town wanting autographs and photo opportunities with Pacquiao.
Upon learning Roach’s displeasure, gym owner Rex “Wakee” Salud will now impose a stricter measure: “No Pass-No Entry” policy starting today.
Even sportswriters and media men are not spared.
“We have to follow. Effective tomorrow (today), we need to impose a stricter rule. Many would not like it, because there were a lot of appeals but we have to be strict. I have to do it and I just wanted to ask for understanding if we can not really accommodate them,” Salud said.
Pacquiao had again sparred three rounds each with Beltran and Rodela and another Mexican sparring partner is coming to Cebu including Filipino Arnel Tinampay to help the Filipino boxing superstar in his preparation.
On a brighter note, Pacquiao is ahead of schedule in his training according to Roach. (RCM)
