Wednesday, August 29, 2007 Exhibit promotes heroism, freedom
TO remind Filipinos of the sacrifices of heroes and martyrs in defense of freedom and democracy, the Cebu City Government and a group of stamp collectors held a photo and stamp exhibit recently.
The City Government, through the Cultural and Historical Affairs Commission (Chac), in coordination with Cebu Stamp Club Inc. (CSSI), held the photo and stamp exhibit at Elizabeth Mall Activity Center.
Chac chairperson and Vice Mayor Michael Rama, Chac Commissioner and City Councilor Gerardo Carillo, Chac officer-in-charge Engr. Florentino Boligor, Osman Jumalon, one of the owners of the Butterfly Museum, CSCI president Richard Allan Uy attended the launch.
“This activity is aimed for us to remember how our heroes fought so their efforts would not be in vain,” Rama said.
He said that without their sacrifices, no one could appreciate the gift of democracy.
There is a need to educate the present generation of Filipinos on heroism since many do not even know who the country’s heroes are, Rama said in his speech.
For his part, Uy said that the exhibit also aims to re-awaken the Filipino’s spirit of nationalism and patriotism through the “wonderful world of stamps.”
History
“Stamps are like little repositories of a nation’s history, arts and culture,” he said.
The activity has been an annual joint project of the Cebu City Government and the CSCI since 1996.
Featured during the exhibit were different stamps of Philippine heroes, including the stamp of The Centennial of Tres De Abril Uprising, the first Cebu-proposed stamp issued by the Philippine Postal Corp. through the initiative of CSCI.
During the launching of the exhibit, a dance interpretation of the Battle of Tres De Abril was performed by the Don Carlos Gothong Memorial High School Dance Troupe while the Cebu City Dance Sports Kids did a special number. (Lorna E. Jabuen, UPVCC Mass Comm)
