20 houses lost in late night fire in Guadalupe

TWENTY houses were razed in a fire in Sitio Kanaas, Guadalupe, Cebu City past 11 p.m. Monday.

No one was reported hurt but the fire destroyed an estimated P400,000 in properties.

The fire reportedly started at the second level of the two-story house of Marvin Judel Mauleo.

SF01 Alikasem Espinola, according to FO3 Nick Ouano of the Cebu City Fire Department, reported that the fire started when Mauleo’s five-year-old son played with a lighter near a blanket.

This was learned from Mauleo’s mother-in-law Corazon Opendo.

Heavy downpour

Espinola reported that Mauleo was out of the house to fetch his wife when the incident occurred.

Despite the heavy downpour, the firefighters failed to stop the fire from gutting 19 other houses, mostly made of light materials.

The Cebu City Fire Department tapped the first alarm at 11:04 p.m. It was later raised to second alarm before the fire was declared under control five minutes later.

At Cebu City Hall, Councilor Gerardo Carillo said the Cebu City Government is donating P250,000 to Barangay Guadalupe as financial assistance for the victims of Tuesday night’s fire.

Calamity fund

Yesterday morning, Guadalupe officials declared the place under a state of calamity so they can tap the barangay’s calamity fund to help the estimated 50 displaced individuals.

Barangay Captain and City Council Ex-officio Member Eugenio Faelnar told Sun.Star Cebu that Guadalupe already sent food for
the victims.

He said he approached his colleagues in the City Council for help because the Council does not have a session today.

The City Department of Social Welfare Services (DSWS) was still listing the victims’ names when Sun.Star called up Carillo yesterday afternoon.

Carillo said City Hall already sent food assistance and will distribute construction materials in the next few days.

Guadalupe officials, he said, are the ones who will give the City’s P250,000 financial assistance to the victims.

Faelnar said they will give P10,000 for each burned structure. (JST/RHM/ With FVQ of Sun.Star Superbalita)
