Fiscal in ‘Abu’ case fears for his life
THE prosecutor handling the complaint against the suspected member of the Abu Sayyaf group expressed fear for his life.
Cebu City Assistant Prosecutor Fernando Gubalane explained that it is “normal” for him to fear for his safety.
Gubalane is handling the complaint for illegal possession of explosives against suspected Abu Sayyaf member Noy Ampuan.
Ampuan, 19, from Barangay Giawa, Kabuntalan town in Maguindanao Province, was arrested on board Superferry 5 when it made a stopover in Cebu last Wednesday, on its way to Manila from Zamboanga City.
A 90mm recoilless rifle projectile and one M76 rifle grenade were found in a sack of bananas traced to Ampuan.
“Anyone will surely fear for his life, especially that there is a bomb,” Gubalane said in Cebuano.
He, however, clarified that he is not asking for any security detail but said what he feels is “normal” as he is human.
Gubalane also disclosed that there is no reason for anyone to inflict harm on him because he has always been fair in his decision.
He explained that the resolution of all the complaints he handled and will handle will always be based on merits and not on personal biases.
Ampuan has until Sept. 3 to file his counter-affidavit.
The suspected bomber earlier signed a waiver of detention for him to be able to controvert the charges against him.
He was also able to contact his relatives, who promised him that they will bring a lawyer to defend him in the case. (KNT)
