Thursday, August 30, 2007 Speak out: Inday Nita’s death By Gilbert P. Wagas
EVERYBODY has to go. This is a fact of life.
The legendary Nenita “Inday Nita” Cortes Daluz has passed away. Like any other human being, she was destined to go back to her Maker.
Undoubtedly, her existence in this world was extraordinary. And being a Compostelanhon, I am very proud of her.
Inday Nita was born on Nov. 25, 1938 at Sitio Guiwanon, Barangay Poblacion, Compostela, Cebu. She became a radio talent at the age of 15, and later became one of the staunchest advocates of truth, freedom and democracy during the darkest period of our history as a people.
Inday Nita was arrested and detained in Camp Lapu-Lapu for covering the first Freedom March on Sept. 21, 1980. That started her political activism against the Marcos dictatorship. Her voice in the air lane was the symbol of the struggle against lies and monopoly that was the foundation of the Marcos dictatorship.
Inday Nita became a Member of Parliament in 1984, the lone survivor among Panaghiusa candidates in Cebu province. She was the leading oppositionist in Central Visayas, espousing non-violence. In truth, she was the most underestimated political figure of her time. She was no doubt a phenomenon.
Inday Nita’s death is a great loss to the broadcast industry in the Visayas and Mindanao. But she lived life to its fullest. She was able to fulfill her Christian mission, which was to preach the Gospel of Truth and Justice, regardless of the consequences.
May her death inspire young broadcasters of today to continue her crusade to fight for what is right and oppose all forms of lies and deception.
