Thursday, August 30, 2007 Seares: Bohol rogues and heroes By Pachico A. Seares News Sense
WHEN Cebu police called the gang that robbed a bank teller of P2.7 million in front of La Nueva Supermart "the Bohol robbery group," Bohol politicians howled.
Call them something else, they asked, the name speaks ill of Bohol.
PNP officials, ever eager to please politicos, promptly dropped "Bohol" and called the bandits the Garcia robbery gang.
Apparently forgetting there are also politicians named Garcia, the most publicized of whom is a governor never linked with larceny or mayhem.
Any person, place, or object with a name becomes famous or infamous, or stays obscure. Yet, the name hardly hogs full blame or credit.
Not the race
Forget about the rose being sweet by whatever name. A name can help or hurt but not totally.
South Road Properties is more classy and upscale than South Reclamation Area but, whoa, it takes a lot more for SRP to woo investors.
Crossroads and Paseo? Other than the name, there are elements in the blend to catch their market.
Sitio Baho in San Fernando town and Sitio Bulsita in Cebu City tell what they are known for (the first, for the stink from hogs' waste; the second, for thousands of grocery bags they used to make). But the names don't reflect character of the folks there.
The tag "Bohol robbery group" doesn't mean Boholanos are robbers. The name indicates origin of a few crooked Boholanos, not the Boholano race.
Consider: Bohol police's skill caught the gang boss and three cohorts. Bohol security guards' courage ruled in the shootout with the robbers. Would they want the "Bohol" omitted from public accolade?
