Thursday, August 30, 2007 Chiongbian: Game of six sports opens today By Edgar R. Chiongbian Teetime
TODAY, all roads lead to Cebu City.
The presidents and team captains already arrived yesterday for the final meeting at Casino Español, but the rest of the teams are still coming in today from nine domestic and two international destinations for the official opening of the “game of six sports”, the 30th PAL InterSports at the City Sports Club Cebu in Ayala.
The history of the PAL InterSports can be traced back to Cebu where it all began 30 years ago. After hosting it in 2001, Los Jefes de Cebu is now back as host of the annual event.
Air Philippines is a new partner of Philippine Air Lines for the Intersports.
Hopefully, this gives our traveling teams from the Visayas and Mindanao a better option and choice on scheduling and discounting of air tickets for their trip.
Confirmed for this big budgeted event are over 700 participants. Golf venues are Cebu Country Club this Friday and Mactan Coral on Saturday. Casino Español will be the venue for tennis and billiards; Alta Vista is a venue also for tennis. City Sports Club will host basketball and bowling, while Capitol Parish is the secondary venue for basketball, where our new Jefes basketball “50 and above team” will be competing for the first time in an age group that is the new rage in basketball. Badminton will be at the Montebello Hotel.
Welcome fellowship dinner will be held tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Casino Español. Participants and guests will be entertained by Manila singers Janet Basco, and the New Minstrels. There will be a surprise number, which I cannot divulge at this time but is a sure-in guaranteed crowd pleaser, so don’t miss that by being late. Awarding dinner will be at Grand Convention Center on Saturday night with entertainment probided by bossa nova princess, Sitti and by Rueben Laurente who just came back from a singing competition in Los Angeles.
The 15th Luzvimin Interclub golf tournament of Women’s Golf (WGAP) is now history. Del Monte defended its title and is a repeat champion with team ace Lovelyn Guiogiuo grabbing once again the top individual title with a total of 164 points or a gross score of two-under for the 3-day work out. We stand proud of Kathleen Uy from CCC for taking the second individual honors with a 156 total Stableford points on the Molave system.
So how did our local teams do? Well let me tell you how very well our Club Filipino team did on their very own self-supported, best-dressed team. With teammates of only five players instead of the usual six, they took second place in the Pearl division. The never-say-die players are Eva Hino, Jeannette Chiu, Lucille Colina, Remy Perez and Flor Streegan. And by the way, except for Remy, they will all be playing for the Los Jefes golf team so you guys on the other side better be ready, because these gals surely are!
The 3rd Jose “Cheling” Garcia Memorial Cup was held last Saturday at Cebu Country Club as host to the August monthly medal tournament. Taking the Cup was Jovi Neri with the lowest gross of 76. And there was a special treat by the father and son tandem of Efren and Marko Sarmiento, taking the once-a-year job as awarding king and prince, host and emcee of the evening.
Efren may be a little rusty on the vocals but sure makes up for it with his sunshiny smile. And you know they did very well because almost all the golf buddies in our table went home with a nice raffle prize. Hehehe.
GOLF TIP. In our desire for more power, it is very easy to get our lower body too active at the start of the downswing.
When the lower body slides aggressively toward the target to begin the downswing, our upper body tilts away from the target and our arms can’t swing down freely. This free swing is what squares the clubface and that is why our straight shots are not in the fairway.
To get extra power, shorten your backswing and rotate your weight around your left leg on the downswing. Shortening your backswing will help keep your lower body and upper body in sync. Rotating over your front leg will clear more room for your arms to swing and the clubface can square up naturally through the hitting zone.
