LOOKS like my ultimate bully vs. bully dream match up will have to wait - for now.
The much-anticipated “Ferocious” Fernando Vargas-Ricardo “Matador” Mayorga bout has reportedly been postponed indefinitely as Vargas was found to be suffering from anemia.
In an e-mail to fightnews.com, Vargas’ nutritionist Robert Ferguson stated: “What everyone doesn’t know is that Vargas’ iron deficiency is due to a loss in blood from the sores on his stomach. Anemia is not an overnight phenomenon unless something odd happens. Well, that something odd is internal bleeding and when you lose blood you can face many health challenges.”
Poor Fernando. This will probably serve as fodder for more of Mayorga’s outrageous taunts. I shudder just thinking about the semantic possibilities.
Mayorga will probably refer to him as a ferocious anemic. Now that would be something. Ranks right up there with my favorite oxymora such as “anxious patient”, “constant change” “military intelligence” and “good lawyer”. Hehehe!
TIRED VARGAS. Anemia is having less than the normal number of red blood cells or less hemoglobin than normal in the blood.
As a result, oxygen transported through the body is affected and the person with anemia is often referred to as under-oxygenated. Thus, people diagnosed with anemia can feel tired, fatigue easily, and experience shortness of breath.
I have always been a Fernando Vargas fan. I can put up with his cocky demeanor because he is a highly entertaining fighter.
He doesn’t just sing it, he brings it.
He is a fierce competitor inside the ring, but off it, he is a devout family man with numerous business interests. He is also one of the very few superstars of this sport who genuinely adores the fans, and relishes and thrives in the attention and support they have shown through the years.
He has declared the Mayorga fight to be his last one and promised to make it one for the ages. I personally hope he will continue to fight on, win or lose.
Whatever the case, I am glad his condition was diagnosed before the big dance with vicious mauler Mayorga. He will need all the iron he can muster in this fight.
PAL INTERSPORTS. After six years, Los Jefes De Cebu brings back the PAL Intersports Tournament to Cebu City. For its 30th run, the PAL Intersports annual sporting event in partnership with Island Holidays of Air Philippines will be held on Aug. 30 to Sept. 1, 2007 and is expected to gather over 1,000 players and spectators from different teams of business executives and professionals from all over the country and abroad. JAPAN THE BEST CHALLENGER. After watching one of my favorite boxers, Randy Suico, struggle with Koji Samejima before nailing him with a two-punch combination in the 8th and Jimrex Jaca escape with a draw with Ryu Miyagi after the fight was stopped in the second round due to cuts, I am all the more convinced that Japan is the rightful challenger to the World Cup of Boxing.
A few columns ago, I detailed the list of Japanese champions and the possible matchups against our own titleholders. I bragged that our advantage would be our very deep roster.
But I’m having second thoughts. Jimrex and Randy could have been capable team Philippine team members or subs. The life and death struggle they underwent against two Japanese boxers who have fought less than 20 fights, each, demonstrates that we need to be very careful in our selections and style match-ups.
THE LAST ROUND. It’s on the dudes and dudettes of the Singles for Christ-Cebu.
