Ampuan’s relatives want to post bail of P100T for his release

THE family of suspected Abu Sayyaf member Noy Ampuan is now in Cebu.

Ampuan’s family signified their intention to post bail and the cancellation of the waiver of detention Noy signed upon his arrest.

Ampuan’s mother yesterday visited the Palace of Justice to inquire about the complaint filed against her son.

Cebu City Assistant Prosecutor Fernando Gubalane explained to Noy’s mother that her son is facing a complaint for illegal possession of explosives.

Ampuan, 19, from Barangay Giawa, Kabuntalan town in Maguindanao Province, was arrested on board Superferry 5 when it made a stopover in Cebu last Aug. 22 on its way to Manila from Zamboanga City.

Recovered from his possession were a 90mm recoilless rifle projectile and one M76 rifle grenade.

The items were found in a sack of bananas traced to Ampuan.

Gubalane also told Ampuan’s mother that the bail for such offense is set at P200,000.

Gubalane said that Noy’s parents told him that they have no lawyer, prompting the prosecutor to refer them to the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO).

A bondsman (name withheld) told reporters that Noy’s mother together with his uncle asked for his help in posting bail for Noy.

The bondsman said Ampuan’s relatives wanted the bail to be reduced to P100,000 because they cannot afford the P200,000 bail.

Ampuan’s mother reportedly had the P100,000 in her bag.

As of 4 p.m. yesterday, though, the family of Ampuan has not yet filed their petition for bail. (KNT)
