Friday, August 31, 2007 Talk back: Cemetery thieves By Ciriaco A. Tirol Sitio NGA, Lahug, Cebu City
THIS is in connection with the article of Buddy Lopez Melencion (Sun.Star Cebu, Aug. 3, 2007) regarding the thievery inside the Carreta cemetery.
I had the same experience.
In 1987, I purchased at the said cemetery a graveyard lot where a family mausoleum could be constructed.
It is normal for the lot owner to put some improvements inside the mausoleum, like an expensive cross made of stainless steel and a 14x14 inch lapida made of the same metal.
Last year, I found out that said items have been lost and are nowhere to be found.
Because of this, I would say that stealing from tombs and mausoleums is rampant in the Carreta cemetery to the detriment of their owners.
Is the administrator of the Carreta cemetery, which is under the control and supervision of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, inefficient and incompetent?
Is he aware of these incidents inside the cemetery?
Certainly, I was not the only one victimized by thieves because the stainless lapida of the deceased relatives of my close friend was also lost.
Other victims are afraid to come out in the open.
There is a mystery behind the incident because my mausoleum caretaker failed to stop it.
I hope that the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, together with the administrator of the cemetery, will take appropriate and effective measures to stop once and for all the thievery inside the cemetery.
