THE LOS Jefes de Cebu tennis team made up for the dismal day of its basketball team as they led opening day winners of the 30th PAL Intersports held at the Casino Español tennis courts yesterday.
The bowling squad also topped the opening day hostilities, lording over seven other competitors at the City Sports Club-Cebu bowling alley.
The Los Jefes de Cebu tennis squad is composed of team captain John Pages, Roy Tabo-Tabo, Joel Tabura, Jaime Quiñones, Macky Michael, Jun San Juan, Fritz Tabura, Danny Mella, Alex Ngo, Bobby Espera, Nelson Bacaltos, Nene Montederamos and Rose Furigay.
The team swept its doubles assignments to beat Los Ilonggos, 5-0.
Tennis competition are divided into five different categories – two divisions for the 35 years old and up, the 45 years old and up, the 50 years old and older for men and the women’s doubles.
Los Caballeros de Zamboanga emerged a 4-1 winner over Wallabies of Down Under. At the Alta Vista tennis courts, the Negros (Bacolod) Executives dumped Manila Executives 4-1, while the game between Los Amigos de Iloilo and Bomberos de Davao was still going on as of press time.
The win of the tennis team salvaged the day for Cebu, coming from back-to-back defeats of the grand slam seeking 40 years old and 50 years old and up basketball squads at the Capitol Parish gym and the City Sports Club Gym.
The Los Jefes de Cebu 40 years old and up cage team suffered a 76-82 defeat to Los Ilonggos at the Capitol Parish gym while the 50 years old and up squad lost to Bomberos de Davao, 65-60, at the City Sports Club Gym.
Los Amigos de Iloilo also pulled a 52-44 win over Bomberos de Davao in the 40s tournament while Negros Executive won 81-70 over Los Ilonggos and Quezon City Katipuneros whipped Los Caballeros de Zamboanga 59-40 in the 50s game.
At the bowling lanes, Los Jefes de Cebu keglers also showed their dominance, sweeping two games to top day one of competition with a total 1840 pinfalls.
In Game 1, the Cebuanos scored 929. They followed it with 911 pinfalls in Game 2.
Trailing close to the Cebuanos was the Los Amigos de Iloilo with 1611 pinfalls. Los Ilonggos finished third with 1573.
Negros Executives finished with 1568, Bomberos de Davao with 1513, Los Caballeros de Zamboanga with 1495 and the Wallabies of Down Under at the bottom, with 895.
As of press time, the complete results of the badminton games were still not available.
But Tonette Lim, the tournament chief recorder, reported that Los Jefes de Cebu Men’s double squads won two of its three games. (RCM)
