UV strangles USC to remain unbeaten

THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers showed an overflowing Cebu Coliseum just why they are the defending champions of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi)---because they can.

The UV Green Lancers have been the best team in the Cesafi for the last six editions. As far as reputation goes, it’s a hard thing to shake off.

Powered by an all-star, gigantic cast, the UV Green Lancers arrested the University of San Carlos Warriors’ six-game winning streak, overpowering the latter, 93-77, in what seemed like a rematch of last year’s finals.

The Warriors’ grit and determination were simply not enough to match UV’s size, as UV went on to take solo leadership in the collegiate division with a 6-0 win-loss slate. USC ended the elimination round at a sure second place, with 6-1.

UV coach Elmer Cabahug banked on size to outmatch the Warriors. Cabahug’s starting five, led by six-foot-11 Gregory Slaughter and six-foot-seven Rino Berami, were enough to hold off USC.

UV was able to build up a confident lead early in the first frame, ending it with 25-14. Things only worsened for the Warriors as the lead bloated to 46-28 at the turn.

Michael Luga led UV with 18 markers, while Berami and Chris Diputado combined for 31 points.

Enrico Llanto led USC with 18, as Niño Ramirez and Carlo Padayao added 15 points each.

Meanwhile, the Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats finally barged into the win column as it thrashed the University of Southern Philippines Panthers, 80-53. Sherwin Abobo led CIT with 20 points.

CIT is now tied with its victim with an identical 1-5 card.

UV (93) – Luga 18, Berame 16, Diputado 15, Dennison 10, Lanete 9, Slaughter 8, Tancongco 8, Mepana 5, Sendrijas 2, Lasala 2
USC (77) – Llanto 18, Ramirez 15, Padayao 15, Joven 13, Hermosa 9, Padillo 4, Bakker 2, Lazalita 1. (MCB)
