Fourteen lay leaders will be honored in a mass that will be officiated by Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral tomorrow.
These awards will serve as recognition of their services to the Church, their participation in the activities of the Archdiocese of Cebu, and their being good examples to others.
The awardees are former chief justice Hilario Davide Jr. (Knight of Gran Croce); businessman Ernesto Aboitiz (Knighthood); Norma Liu and seminary professor Josefina Matheu (Dames of St. Sylvester); Engelberto Alaba, engineer Eriberto Caballero, corporate manager Ver dela Cerna, Socorro Gonzales, Elena Jarantilla, conservation architect Melva Java, Oasis of Love head Nonito A. Limchua, lawyer Julius Neri and Dr. Montana Saniel (Cross “Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice” Award); and Dr. Rene Josef Bullecer (Meritorious Medal).
18 priests
In another mass by Vidal at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral on Sept. 27, a recommendation from Pope Benedict XVI will confer titles to 18 priests in Cebu.
One of these titles is the Protonotary Apostolic to be given to Msgr. Adelito Abella, chancellor of the Archdiocese of Cebu, Msgr. Roberto Alesna, Cebu Archdiocese Commission on Service, and Msgr. Esteban Binghay, parish priest of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Minglanilla town.
Seven priests will be granted the titles of honorary prelates while eight will be recognized as papal chaplains. After the conferment, the honorary prelates and papal chaplains will be using the title of monsignor.
These titles are given to priests who hold positions in the Church such as episcopal vicar or in the Archdiocese of Cebu like the position of rector or chairman of a commission.
