Monday, September 10, 2007 Costanilla: An instant hit By Sam Costanilla spotlight
GARBO SA SUGBO awardee and topnotch event director Junjet Primor e-mailed his impression of the recent Suroy-Suroy Sugbo Northern Escapade, Gov. Gwen Garcia’s local tourism program. According to him, the Suroy-Suroy was a truly colorful, entertaining and fabulous Cebuano treat. “The different festivals of the north, like the Sarok of Consolacion, Karansa of Danao City, Budbod Kabog of Catmon, Haladaya of Daanbantayan, Kinhason of Santa Fe and Palawod of Bantayan emphasized the point that Cebu is undoubtedly the festival island of the entire Philippines,” Junjet wrote.

IT WAS ALSO during the Suroy-Suroy that the tourists were amazed to find out that Compostela Mayor Richie Wagas and Madridejos Mayor Sally de la Fuente can sing, even better than professional entertainers, Junjet added. Now I know, Jet, the two singing mayors have something to fall back on should they decide to leave politics in the future.

JUNJET also noted that the spontaneous partying in Bantayan with the Palawod dance company was an instant hit and everybody had a great time dancing to the music of singing champ Maria Donna’s Pastilan Bay. In Catmon, he added, the senior citizens delighted the crowd with their Kuyayang dance number while some Pinoy games in Borbon, especially the palosebo, were a hit. “The parade of bancas in the river of Liloan was a delightful sight while the grand finale of the Suroy-Suroy was the mass singing of Paul Melendez’s Mabuhi with Gov. Garcia and Mayor Duke Frasco leading the dancing,” Junjet observed. By the way, the next Suroy-Suroy will be on Sept. 15 and 16 featuring the cities of Mandaue and Lapu-Lapu and the town of Cordova.

IT WILL be a night of real fun with hilarious jokes and socially relevant songs on Sept. 27 when three of the country’s top comedians do a show together here in Cebu. Nanette Inventor, Jon Santos and Leo Martinez will be doing In Kiliti-Kal Condition as a special concept for Sacred Heart School batch ‘82 and as a fund-raising event to benefit the Emergency Rescue Unit Foundation. Freddie Santos directs the show, organized by Why Not Productions, at the Grand Convention Center in Banilad.

THIS CEBUANA is now doing well and making it big as an executive of Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York. According to my US-based friend and former colleague, Jun Satorre, Dolly Nacario has been working as the hotel’s human resources manager since 2005. The hotel, located at 301 Park Avenue in Manhattan, is a 47-story landmark that has three American and classic European restaurants while several luxurious boutiques surround the distinctive lobby which has won awards for its restoration to the original period character. Dolly, Jun added, used to work with Norkis Group of Companies in Mandaue City as well as the University of San Carlos where she taught business management.

THIS notorious radioman is seriously planning to run in the Oct. 29 barangay elections. He was brutally frank enough to tell his friends that he is running just for the “fun” of it.
