Council to buy new aircons for P2.9M, won’t use old ones

DESPITE the earlier agreement to use old air conditioning units, the Cebu City Council approved the appropriation of P2.9 million to buy 37 new ones for the newly renovated legislative building.

The amount also covers the spare parts and repair cost for the old air conditioners.

Councilor Augustus Pe Jr. said the City will have to buy new units as the existing ones will not be enough.

New offices

Also, most of the units they are using are window-type air conditioners, which cannot be used in the new building.

The council is proposing to buy 37 wall-mounted, ceiling or standing type units before the transfer to the new offices in December.

Electricity

During its session last Wednesday, the council approved a resolution asking the committee on budget and finance to appropriate P2.9 million to cover the purchase and repair of air conditioners.

The cost of each unit ranges from P26,649 to P88,000.

“What we have now is not enough and some are not in good condition that is why we have to buy additional units and repair those that are not working. The really old units will also have to go because they consume a lot of electricity,” Pe explained.

Wait

The City will also have to buy chillers and other cooling units for the waste-to-energy district cooling system that will be used in the new building, but it will have to wait until April.

Consultants on the new system still have to calculate the tonnage requirements for the four-story building.

Earlier, the council agreed to use old air conditioners and furniture to save on renovation costs after learning that the City does not have enough funds to complete the renovation by December.

Among the offices in the new building, the session hall will need the most number of air conditioners, costing P707,400 for all eight units.

Units at the City Attorney’s Office will be the second most expensive, costing the City P180,600.

The vice mayor and the city councilors’ offices will get one unit each. (LCR)
