Demand for food spells trouble for trio

FOURTEEN mountaineers who trekked Osmeña Peak over the weekend were rescued by policemen from the towns of Argao and Dalaguete after a young man and two minors allegedly harassed them yesterday dawn.

Osmeña Peak straddles Dalaguete and Badian towns and is frequented by hikers.

Authorities took the minors and 19-year-old Junelito O. Orozco, all of Sitio Private, Barangay Mantalongon, Dalaguete into custody after the mountain climbers sought them for help.

Dalaguete police identified the climbers as Emmanuel Sawit, Alex Toledo, Gianina Edcong, Fojilin Pacencia, Liezel Abalos, Eillen Ayuban, Mac Golveo, Charles Abelgas, Alden Atega, Landolph Villanueva, Joanne Palomo, Zachellan Ponce, Kirk Villegas and a certain Gigi, all of Cebu City.

Argao policemen SPO1 Esteban Albuera and PO3 Leopoldo Godinez, with PO3 Clito Pia and PO1 Alan Sanoy of Dalaguete Police Station, were the ones who responded to the call for assistance.

The climbers told the police that they were awakened at 2:45 a.m. by the presence of Orozco and the minors roaming around their campsite.

The three reportedly asked for food because they were hungry.

The climbers, however, got alarmed when they noticed that Orozco had with him a screw driver, so they decided to detain him and his companions.

Friends and relatives tried to set Orozco and the minors free, prompting the frightened climbers to call the police.

PO2 Reynaldo Amari-llento of Dalaguete police told Sun.Star that Orozco and the minors were still under their custody as of yesterday afternoon because the climbers said they would file complaints today. (JST)
