Green Lancers reclaim pride
THE University of the Visayas Green Lancers are back on their winning track after redeeming themselves on the ground after their humbling experience last Saturday.
The Lancers vented their ire on the hapless Cebu Institute of Technology Wildcats, 85-57, in the quarterfinal round of the 2007 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) at the USC Gym yesterday.
UV, the top seed after the elimination round, booked a ticket to the semifinal round while the Wildcats, the No. 8 finisher, bid goodbye to their season with the defeat.
In the women’s basketball, the Lady Warriors started its bid with a 71-46 bashing over the University of San Jose-Recoletos Lady Jaguars.
Following a humbling 71-84 defeat to the USJ-R Jaguars last Thursday, the Green Lancers were all business from the start, but victory was already looming at the horizon as the Wildcats showed no fire from the opening jump.
With their superiority in skills and height, the Lancers started strong scoring 22 points against the tentative 16 of CIT.
Michael Luga started to bring fire on the Lancers as the 6-foot-4 power-playing forward led UV to a devastating 20-14 blitz as the game tilted on to the heavyweights as the first half closed at 42-30.
With Luga scoring the game high 28 points and Von Harry Lanete contributed 15 and Chris Diputado finishing with 12, the Lancers erected their biggest lead of the game, 81-51, with little over two minutes left in the game.
With only the Sherwins—Abobo and Resilla—scoring 15 and 10, as the only Wildcats who logged double-digits, CIT’s season is over early.
Meanwhile, the Lady Warriors limited USJ-R to only three points in the first quarter while scoring 19 and then made a 27-4 third quarter rampage to put the game away for good.
USJ-R tried to bring life back with a 19-9 run in the second, but the game was over when the devastating third quarter came into picture.
