Surban steals the show in Nebria’s Copa de Cebu triumph

ANTONIO Nebria was supposed to be the star of yesterday’s final stage of the Copa de Cebu Cycling Cup as he won the overall title after coming up with the most number of points. However, Niño Surban, who did not even place within the top three, rained on Nebria’s parade.

Surban, be it on the mountain trail or on the road, never ceases to impress as the crowd went crazy for the feat he tried to accomplish.

Marked by other racers for being a strong contender, Surban could not seem to get past the second pack because the other racers were ganging up on him in the race’s final stage at the Cebu International Convention Center.

Surban, who was trapped in the second pack, was left behind by 20 seconds. He was looking for the right moment to break away and catch up with the leaders, which was composed of Michael Pantonial, Marjun Villarosa, Nebria and Randy Carbonera.

In the last two laps, Surban found a gap, collected all his might and with all his leg power, tried to catch up and finally did in the last five minutes. This brought the crowd of approximately more than 500 in pandemonium and they cheered on the lanky cycling stalwart.

“This was good thinking for his part. If he had broken away from the chase pack, the rest would have trailed with him,” said race organizer Andot Rubi. (MCB)
