Cepca games this Sunday

THE Cebu Executives and Professionals Chess Association (Cepca) will hold its monthly handicapping chess tournament on Sept. 16 at 1 p.m. at the SM Deep Blue Woodpusher Café in SM City Cebu.

The tournament will be a five-round Swiss system format with a time control of 10 minutes for Class A, 15 minutes for Class B and 20 minutes for Class C. The monthly chess tournament is open to all Class A, B and C players as well as to all Cepca members and guests.

The top three winners will qualify for the December grand finals together with the other monthly winners. Previous monthly winners are William Retanal Jr., Antonio Cabibil, Percival Fiel, and Per Hansen of Denmark.

Meanwhile, Jessa Balbona and Jeroni Vinculado won their respective categories during the monthly Kiddies and Juniors Open chess tourney played recently at the SM Deep Blue Woodpushers Café.

The one-day tourney for August was open to young wood pushers ages 16 yrs old and below for the juniors and the kiddies for under 13 yrs old.

Balbona, who ruled the Juniors event, tallied 4.5 points when she stopped Rhenzi Kyle Sevilla in the last round. King James Torres got second place with a win over Roden Cliff Cuerpo, while Shawn Patrick Osorno landed in third place by defeating Kimberly Cuizon.

In the kiddies bracket, Vinculado scored five points by besting Neil Adrian Gelig in his last match. Gelig for his part got second place. The Balbona siblings—Felix Shawn, John Francis and Marq Gabrielle—secured the third, fourth and fifth places, respectively.

Cash prizes and medals were awarded to the winners. (JGC)
