Utzurrum: Art and dance
By Chinggay V. Utzurrum
The scene

TRULY deserving of all the accolades heaped upon him is hearing-impaired artist and photographer Alnoe Tabanera Paler, who lives by the motto: “a handicap is not a hindrance to success.”

Alnoe proudly counts these awards to his trophy credits: The 1994 National Apolinario Mabini award for Disabled Filipino of the Year; the 2005 Garbo sa Sugbo; and the 2005 Abilympics National Gold Medal for Photography.

For more of this Cebuano genius with the lens, come to his photography exhibit at the Montebello Villa Hotel on Friday, Sept. 14, at 4 p.m. This one-man exhibit, Sight and Heart of a Cebuano Deaf Photographer, will run till Sept. 28.

Bachelors-Femina president Perla Agudo reminds all concerned about the monthly meeting on Saturday, Sept. 15, at 2:30 p.m. at Casino Español’s Bar Mixto.

To be discussed and finalized are the Rigodon de Honor pairings for the Dec. 28 Innocents Day ball. Perla also announces the good news that we already have two “mamas"—Rosebud Rivilla-Sala and Annie Corrales-Mahrt.

This Saturday’s meeting will also welcome past president Maximo Encomienda, who’s now based in Australia.

It seems Theresians get together at the drop of a hat! Bankok-based Elma-Garcia Muangkroot jets in to our Queen City very often, but also just breezes through. This time, we “kidnapped” her for merienda and had a whale of a time catching up on the Who’s Who and What’s What of our dear old Cebu! Casino Español’s Bar Mixto shook with laughter that day. Casino Español was also the choice of High School Class 1960 to map out plans for their Golden Jubilee in 2010. Isn’t it a trifle early, gals? Anyway, it was an appropriate occasion to say hello to honoree, Francisca San Pedro.

We’d also like to congratulate class member Elena D. Jarantilla for being recipient of the prestigious and exclusive Papal award, the Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice.

During a benefit dance by the Angel Society of Cebu Foundation, held at Baseline Ballroom, a surprise guest dancer was a Ballroom Queen, Susan Montecillo.

She entranced the crowd with an intricate interpretation of standard waltz and a tough act to follow for sure during the National & International 2nd Cebu IDSF Open Dancesport when it will be held at Waterfront Cebu City Hotel & Casino on Sept. 22. Good luck from us, Susan!

It’s coming your way again. The Personal Awareness and Leadership Seminar (Pals) will once more bring out the potential in each one of you. Discover your hidden pluses, and learn to develop them positively. Let Pals Facilitator Joey Reyes show you how!

As coordinator Marget F. Villarica says, “… never let the things you want make you forget the things you already have…” Mark these dates on your “must-attend” calendar, Sept 21 to 23.
