GMA reappoints Gwen as chair of peace council

THE Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC) will not convene today to pick a new head as earlier scheduled.

President Arroyo has reportedly given an order for the reappointment of Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia.

Elizabeth Francia, chief of staff of the Office of the Governor, said she received a call from Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) 7 Director Pete Noval that today’s meeting at the Police Regional Office 7 was cancelled.

Francia said that National Police Commission (Napolcom) 7 Director Bernardo Calibo also called the governor’s office informing them of Arroyo’s instructions.

Instruction

“Both officials told us that there is no need for the meeting because the President already instructed Interior and Local Government Secretary Puno to re-appoint the governor,” said Francia.

As of yesterday afternoon, however, Garcia’s office has yet to receive the fax from Puno’s office on her reappointment.

Garcia was surprised with the recent development.

Just last Monday, she received the notice for today’s scheduled meeting for the purpose of picking the new RPOC chairperson.

Development

She was planning of giving way to other officials from other government agencies or other provinces, considering that she is also heading the Regional Development Council.

On Thursday next week, Sept. 20, the National Peace and Order Council will convene in Manila to announce the awards for best RPOCs.

Napolcom officials, in a visit to the governor’s office last week, had said that RPOC in Central Visayas was eyed as one of the outstanding in the whole country. (JPM)
