Chiongbian: Must-see golf tournament
By Edgar R. Chiongbian
Teetime

WITH Tiger Woods on the hunt and Phil Mickelson on the prowl, the finale of the brand new PGA playoffs/ FedEx Cup is a must-see golf tournament. Tiger is playing very well with near-perfect, machine-like precision and is a wonderful sight to see. Who knows his swing may stay or it may go but now it’s here so go and watch the game to witness who gets the highest ever payoff of 10 million dollars in golfing history.

The spoiler could be Steve Stricker, he has enough points to take it all but that means Tiger and Mickelson have to bomb out. Anyone in the limited field of 30 players can win the final leg of the PGA playoffs at Atlanta’s East Lake golf course, but only five players have the combination to win the FedEx Cup based on the points available to them.

That’s Tiger, Mickelson, Rory Sabbatini and K.J. Choi. Aaron Baddeley can play his heart out and sink all his putts and win
the Atlanta tournament but will still come short of points to overtake the top three.

The 6th Ateneo-La Salle golf classic tees off on Sept 19 and 20 at Cebu Country Club. The tournament is open to male and female golfers who studied in any Jesuit school. There will be four divisions; Class A, B, C and Open Class for players without handicaps. The tournament is one-day-to-play but players who play Sept. 19 will have the option to play a second day to improve on their first day scores.

The best gross scores in each class will get 10 points and the net winners getting points as follows: Champion (eight points), runnerup (five points) and 2nd runnerup (two points).

SENIORS. The life span of our super seniors is increasing and I wouldn’t be surprised if before long we will see 100-year-olds playing golf. And what else could be their gripe? Of course it’s the canals and the ravines that are located exactly where their landing area is suppose to be.

Dean Diez is no longer complaining; he just stopped playing golf. What’s he saying? “I can’t cross the small lake on No. 2 and I can’t cross the canal on the 11th hole, not even on the second shot, so what’s my use!”

What’s Bombi Aznar doing about it? No complaints, he just plays from the (ladies) red tees at Alta Vista. No one is complaining either, after all he is a big gun from Alta, except that everyone is wondering when he will start wearing a skirt. Don’t worry Bombs, ladies don’t wear skirts anymore only short shorts and I’m pretty sure no one will want to see your cutie-pie legs.

When they make golf courses difficult, people complain. When they make it too easy, they complain. What’s the compromise? Play the golf course that’s nearest your house so you can get home before you run out of patience.

How about etiquette? Golfers complain about a breach of etiquette when the flight has an open hole in front of them, they won’t allow the group behind to pass them. What about flights which pass others when there are no holes open? That’s what you call power from within.

Golf Tip. To cure a slice, there must be sufficient angle in the backswing to allow you to attack the ball. The over-the-top downswing is a perfect example of the lack of sufficient angle in the backswing. There may be many versions to correct a slice but we have one simple way that you can start with.

Use the following drill with a 6-iron through pitching wedge to improve your backswing angle. Find a wall and make sure that there is plenty of room to make a slow motion full swing. With your back facing the wall approximately six to 12 inches away, make a backswing in a slow motion. If you did your backswing properly, the clubhead will not hit the wall.

Repeat a few times until you feel you can duplicate the swing in normal speed and then move far away from the wall and swing away.
