THE Southwestern University Cobras have started to regain their lost ground in collegiate basketball as they formally entered the semifinal round of the Cebu School Athletic Foundation Inc. college division with a lopsided win over the University of Cebu Webmasters, 100-66, yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras, the newest team in the Cesafi, formally shed off the underdog skin as they barely exerted any effort in thwarting a surprisingly submissive Webmasters.
The UC team, which has always made the top four in the previous seasons, was reduced to smithereens by the Cobras. Instead of displaying their old form, UC blundered. What UC had accomplished instead, was lodging a new record of playing the most pathetic first two periods this season.
It only scored eight points, breaking the erstwhile lowest production in the first period of nine points by the University of the Visayas.
SWU banked on a 26-0 assault in the first few minutes to open the floodgates against UC. The first period run was spearheaded by Eric Zanoria, who scored 12 points in this quarter alone.
UC only managed to score from the triples of Jonathan Canceran and Kelvin Juliane, to end the opening canto, 35-8.
This was virtually the end of the Webmasters as things only turned worse for them in the next period. Instead of bouncing back, it maintained the same performance—or lack of it—and still scored eight points in this quarter to end the half with a 43 point deficit, 59-16.
UC tried to get back on its feet and outscored the Cobras in the penultimate round 27-14, but this was not enough for them to recover.
Zanoria ended the game on top of the SWU scorers with 21 markers. Chris Litorja and Rene Pacquiao scored 16 and 15 for SWU, while Richard Gianchand added 13 points and 12 rebounds.
SWU booked a semifinal outing with early qualifier University of San Carlos, who earlier earned entry to the semis with defending champion University of the Visayas. UV will be facing the winner between University of San Jose-Recoletos Jaguars and the University of Southern Philippines Panthers. (MCB)
