Region 7 to send 14 athletes to Special Olympics in China

REGION 7 will be sending 14 representatives to the Summer Special Olympics in China next week.

Dr. Danilo Villadolid, Cebu’s goddather of athletics and a regional coordinator of the Philippine Sports Commission, will be bringing some 14 athletes and coaches together with representatives from other regions in the meet, which will start on Sept. 28 and end on Oct. 14.

Villadolid, who will serve as the head coach, said that the region is only given slots for athletics and powerlifting. The bulk of the athletes from Cebu come from Mandaue City, which is sending four athletes.

Mizzel Dawa, Candice Sabang, Meriel Tan and Ira Luarez will be competing in athletics and will be chaperoned by head coach Carolina Ambride and Delia Miñoza.

The Cebu City athletes are Wilfredo Tampus Jr. and Marlon Lopez with head coach Ann Lopez. The representative from Bacolod City is Joel Ramacho, while Jesus Pacaldo will represent Tagbilaran.

The lone athlete in powerlifting is Melchor Gabados.

Apart from Villadolid, the region’s participation in the meet for special athletes was also made possible through the efforts of Special Olympics Cebu Chapter top honcho Vivian Dinongpo.

The delegation will leave on Sept. 26 to join the rest of the RP team from other parts of the country before making the connecting flight to China. (MCB)
