Serna: 3 reality show auditions
By Roger Serna
Sounds and Images

BARRING any last minute changes, the auditions for three reality shows over ABS-CBN to be held in Cebu are scheduled this weekend. It’s the second season of the Pinoy Dream Academy (PDA), and the Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) Teens as well as the third season of the Pinoy Big Brother.

Based on the e-mail I received from a network insider a couple of weeks back, that of the PDA will be held today, that of PBB Teens tomorrow, and that of PBB will be on Sunday.

As of this writing, the venue is still to be announced. The flurry of activities of the Press Freedom Week ‘07 celebration have left me hanging as to the final venue of the auditions.

One thing is for sure, though. The auditions will start at 9 a.m. and will end at 3 p.m. Requirements include a valid ID, photocopy and original copy of birth certificate, close-up and full-body pictures and a ballpen.

Age requirements of applicants should be: for PDA Season 2—18 to 25 years by January 2008; for PBB Teen Edition 2—16 to 18 years by April to June 2008; and for PBB Season 3—20 to 35 years by August to December 2008.

If the rumors are to be believed, four Cebuanos are in the short list for the PBB Celebrity Edition. One is a vocal (i.e. voice) coach, one is a male TV host, another is a female TV host and actress, and the last one is a former beauty queen and active ramp model. Just keep posted for updates.

Today marks another anniversary of the imposition of martial law, which, for a while, silenced the media although later on allowed it to function, but under strict supervision. This is the reason why the Cebu media celebrates Press Freedom Week at this time of the year.

It is only in Cebu that workers from different media outlets forget competition for a while and work hand in hand as brothers and sisters in the field. And it is only in this particular time of the year that this happens.

The celebration opened last Sunday with a parade starting at the Cebu City Hall grounds all the way up to the Cebu Provincial Capitol where a Holy Mass, and a short program was held at the social hall.

Some of the days’ big winners were The Freeman group as the star of the parade and Sun.Star Cebu’s contingent for being the early bird. In the production number competition, where the three Cebu major newspapers and the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkasters sa Pilipinas were represented, the Sun.Star group grabbed the coveted grand prize.

An energetic lip synch song and dance rendition of the songs “She Bangs,” “Let’s Get Loud” and “La Vida Loca” by Latin artists Ricky Martin and Jennifer Lopez paved the way for the grand prize to drop on our lap.

Never mind asking what my role was in that number. It’s enough that you know I was part of the group (o-ha!). Famous choreographer Victor Cuenco and his assistants were responsible for bringing out the best in us. Hurray!

For the first time, entertainment writers have formally organized starting last Saturday. In the past celebrations of the Press Freedom Week, this group and its potentials were not recognized for the simple reason that they did not have a formal organization.

The writers covering the entertainment beat have tentatively named the group as the “Egroup.” It is headed by Banat News’ entertainment editor Ryan Mark Borinaga.

Scheduled within the week is the group’s induction and initial participation in the culminating activity of the Press Freedom Week, that is, if time allows. This same group was instrumental in this year’s selection of Miss Press Freedom at Café Adriatico at the Crossroads, which was won by the candidate from The Freeman.

The group is planning to come up with a fund-raising project. Also in the list of activities is the long awaited recognition of local composers and compositions.

Just keep posted. Cebu’s entertainment beat workers group is bent on making its presence felt.
