Laity hold cleanup drive to help in fight v. dengue

THE Cebu Archdiocese is celebrating National Laity Week, and launched it yesterday through simultaneous cleanups in more than 140 parishes in the province.

“While it was launched at the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral, the mother of all parishes in Cebu, we were expecting other parishes to do similar efforts. This way, the cleaning will spread from the parish to the neighborhood,” said Atty. Paterno Acabodillo, Council of the Laity president.

He joined members of religious movements and laity organizations who carried broomsticks and dustpans as they swept the Cathedral’s plaza and surrounding streets.

“This is an initiative of Cebu Archbishop Ricardo Cardinal Vidal, who suggested that we spearhead the archdiocese’s clean and green project as a way to prevent further outbreaks of dengue,” said Acabodillo.

For the environment

In his circular for all parish priests and leaders of diocesan lay movements and organizations, Cardinal Vidal said it is “(my) wish and my hope that the cleaning inside and outside of our parishes be done for a clean and green environment.”

Lay members will also participate in other activities such as free medical clinic, jail visitation, and a forum on waste disposal.

For his part, the Cathedral’s Msgr. Cayetano Gelbolingo encouraged the “Christian flock” to join in the observance through chapel information dissemination.

Concluding activity of the week-long celebration is on Sept. 30 in the Blessed Pedro Calungsod Shrine at the Archbishop’s Palace.

“This will remind us that even our saint, St. Lorenzo Ruiz, and Blessed Pedro Calungsod are lay persons, and they should be our models,” Acabodillo added. (NRC)
