Monday, September 24, 2007 Last second shot hoists ‘Boy Cabs’
FORMER collegiate basketball stars highlighted the side events of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. All-Stars yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.
For Elmer “Boy” Cabahug, Al Solis, Rhoel Gomez and Jun Cabangca, being out of the limelight does not make them less good in their craft
In the three-point shootout of the ex-varsities division, which Cabahug dominated, these former stalwarts turned varsity coaches, were able to pull off better and exciting performances than those playing for the college division.
The “seniors” contest was supposed to be a one-minute and 30-second round, but in the championship round, the finalists decided to up the level and asked that 30 seconds be shaved off from the time.
In the first round, Cabahug was able post 19 points and improved to 20 points for the final run en route to the win.
Cabahug was the last shooter in the last round. Before him, his assistant coach in the University of the Visayas Green Lancers Al Solis, who had 19 points, looked headed for the win as time was running out on Cabahug and he still had 18 points. However, Cabahug released the last and winning ball, which is worth two points, was sailing through the air when the buzzer sounded and went smack into the ring for the win.
The other participants of the shootout were Cebu City Vice Mayor Mike Rama, businessman and basketball aficionado Chester Cokaliong and UC juniors head coach Reggie Licanda.
In the collegiate division, University of San Jose Recoletos’ Jessmar Villahermosa scored 20 points to win over other finalists Von Lañete of UV and Marjun Apura of Don Bosco College.
In the slamdunk competition, Southwestern University’s Eric Zanoria was the sole player who showed sterling performance in his final two of the four attempts to earn perfect 10’s from the judges to take the victory.
In his first try, Zanoria had the generic two-handed dunk before upgrading to a more impressive stunt, letting the ball bounce catching it and making a one-handed dunk before traipsing from the basket to overpower defending winner Eulogio Lasala. (MCB)
