Team dominates secondary, college games

THE East team once more showcased its grit as it won in both the high school and college games of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) All-Stars event winning over the West teams yesterday at the Cebu Coliseum.

In the college division, the East team composed of University of the Visayas Green Lancers, University of San Carlos Warriors, University of Southern Philippines Foundation dismantled a seemingly tough West team of Southwestern University, University of San Jose Recoletos, University of Cebu and Cebu Institute of Technology, 99-90.

The East actually had to bear with a tough West team, which was able to take hold of the driver’s seat in the first period, leading by as much as 10, 24-16.

In the second, initiated a comeback as it dropped an 11-2 run, to take the lead, 27-26, to eventually end the first half 35-all.

In the third, a resilient Niño Ramirez and partner-in-crime Enrico Llanto put up a valiant effort as they blazed the East team’s trail to victory as they scored the 14-7 run of the East to take the edge, 49-42.

At this juncture, it virtually became a fight between the West and the Lancers and coach Boy Cabahug fielded his reliable men to finish the job. The game turned around with the East at the lead, 68-59, behind a buzzer-beating triple from Chris Diputado, who threw a precarious shot from half court.

The West then showed just how dangerous it could be as it attempted to make another comeback in the payoff period.

Down by nine, USJR’s Manny Gabas, Lyndon Gudez and John Malinao initiated a 14-5 run to take the lead for the last time, 77-75 the East erased this when it retaliated with a 14-4 rally to build up an insurmountable lead for good.

Gabas topscored for the West after scoring a game-high 21 points, while Gudez added 13.

Luga was named MVP of the seniors division after topscoring for the West with 14 points.

In the juniors class, the East defeated the West, 102-94. UV’s John Abad was named the juniors MVP after finishing with 16 points.

East (99)—Luga 14, Ramirez 13, Perturbos 11, Diputado 11, llanto 10, Lañete 9, Slaughter 8, Mepaña 5, Bugtai 2. West (90)—Gabas 21, Gudez 13, Malinao 11, Ponce 11, Abobo 10, Villahermosa 7, Gianchand 7, Abella 3, Jalandoniu 2, Zanoria 2, Resilla 2, Litorja 1.
