Glo names Razon new PNP chief
A FORMER Central Visayas director of the Philippine National Police will be the next PNP Chief.
President Arroyo yesterday announced the appointment of Police Deputy Director General for Administration Avelino Razon Jr. as the new PNP chief, to replace Director General Oscar Calderon who will retire on Oct. 1.
“Our incoming chief of the PNP, Avelino “Sonny” Razon Jr., who will be the chief PNP starting on Oct. 1,” Arroyo said during a business forum in Iligan City.
On that day, Calderon will turn 56, the mandatory retirement age.
Razon, on hearing his appointment, thanked the President “for her trust and confidence” and promised “to do a better job for the citizenry.”
Razon had served as Police Regional Office (PRO) 7 director in 2001. He resigned in late June 2002 as PRO 7 chief after Interior Secretary Jose Lina announced the relief of seven senior police officials, including Razon and then Cebu Provincial Police Office chief Jose Antonio Salvacion.
The police officials allegedly failed to curb illegal numbers games like jueteng and masiao.
Razon explained that his resignation was meant to erase speculations he was clinging to his post and getting some benefits from illegal gambling operations.
Razon, a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) Class of 1974, served twice as chief of then Western Police District Office, which is now the Manila Police District.
He also served as director of the National Capital Region Police Office and headed Task Force Usig for a time before focusing on his job as PNP deputy director for administration.
Razon, who will retire from service on Sept. 28, 2008, earlier said if he gets the top PNP post, his focus will be on making the PNP closer, friendlier and more accessible to the public.
He will replace Calderon, a member of PMA Class of 1976, who has reportedly been promised a position at the Department of the Interior and Local Government. (Sunnex)
