50 woodpushers take Chess Challenge today

FIFTY woodpushers from around the country are seeing action today as the Chess Challenge blasts off at 9 a.m. at the Cebu International Convention Center.

This three-day tournament is a side event of the 6th Asian Individual Chess Championships undertaken by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

The chess competition is open to all players with ratings of lower than 2300. It uses the 9-round Swiss system with a time limit of one hour and 15 minutes with increments.

A total of P55,000 in cash will be given to the winners. The prizes at stake are first place at P20,000, second place P10,000, third P6,000, fourth P4,000 and fifth P3,000. Sixth to 10th place will each get P2,000.

There will also be special prizes for the top lady player, top kiddie player and the top unrated player. They will each get P1,000 for their efforts. The registration fee for the tourney is P250.

Interested players have to go to the CICC and register there. (JGC)
