Wednesday, September 26, 2007 Speak out: A Cebuano should lead PRO 7 By Segundino C. Villamor Tintay, Talamban, Cebu City
THE issue on who will replace PRO 7 Chief Silverio Alarcio Jr. will determine how strong the influence our local politicians wield.
Gov. Gwen Garcia wants PRO 7 Deputy Director Ronald Roderos to replace Alarcio while Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña and Reps. Raul del Mar and Antonio Cuenco strongly endorse Ireneo Bacolod, a Cebuano.
The reason why Roderos has silently rejected an offer for him to head the Philippine National Police Academy was obvious.
He wants to become PRO 7 chief.
The offer was made after his promotion to one-star general months ago.
Meanwhile, it has been rumored that a local chief executive is a barrier to Roderos getting the post. The speculation now seems to be true.
The recent transfer to Camp Crame of former deputy regional director Lani-o Nerez was a disappointment rather than a surprise to some officers.
He is a well-loved and most respected police officer.
Nerez is a mixed Bicolano-Ilocano native but speaks Bisaya more correctly than Roderos.
Both Nerez and Roderos resided in Cebu for a long time and married Cebuanos.
Anyway, it could be worth recalling that Roderos once served as Cebu City Police Office director.
Unfortunately, he was ousted from the post after robberies and holdups went unabated resulting in the deterioration of the peace and order situation in the city.
As a Cebuano, I prefer a true-bloodied Cebuano to lead PRO 7.
Still Camp Crane has the final word on the matter.
