Wednesday, October 03, 2007 PB calls on towns, cities to prepare for floods
CEBU’S provincial lawmakers are calling on local chief executives in all component cities and municipalities to be active in their preparations against possible flooding in their respective areas.
The Cebu Provincial Board (PB), in its regular session last Monday, passed a resolution advising all local government units to coordinate with the weather bureau so they could give appropriate warning to their constituents.
“Our country is experiencing a weak La Niña these days until the end of the year, and therefore there’s a need for the public to be aware of its effects so they can prepare for their safety,” read a resolution authored by PB Member Juan Bolo.
Rainfall
La Niña is associated with increased rainfall, as opposed to the El Niño, the term often used for drought experienced in the country on some months.
Just recently, the weather bureau has warned the public of strong winds because of the southwest monsoon, locally referred to as habagat.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Service Administration has announced that habagat is causing rough seas and heavy rains, an advisory that is helpful as all towns in Cebu have coastal barangays.
Officials of one municipality also already made preparations for the heavy rains and the possible damage that these may bring to them.
‘Imminent danger’
The Municipal Government of Aloguinsan passed a resolution declaring their town in “imminent danger” of being hit by any typhoon that will pass by Cebu in the coming months.
With this, the town can access its calamity funds for disaster-preparedness, such as repairing their relocation centers. (JPM)
