After 30 motorbikes, ‘thief’s’ streak ends

POLICE arrested a man who owned up to stealing at least 30 motorcycles in Metro Cebu, including one from SPO4 Isagani Pugoy of the Cebu City Police Office’s Theft and Robbery Section (TRS).

By cutting the main ignition key wiring of a motorcycle using a nose hair cutter, Raul Laguardia, 36, of Bañadero, Ozamiz City can switch on a motorcycle and take it
away.

A team from the Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Bureau (CIIB) led by Senior Insp. George Ylanan arrested Laguardia at 4:45 p.m. on C. Padilla St. in Barangay Mambaling, by virtue of a warrant of arrest for car theft.

The arrest warrant dated Oct. 21, 2004 was issued by Regional Trial Court Judge Ramon G. Codilla Jr., who set bail at P100,000.

During the operation, Laguardia, who temporarily stayed in Carbon Market, Barangay Ermita, was found in possession of a .38 revolver loaded with four bullets.

Laguardia, who was presented to reporters yesterday, admitted his skills in stealing motorcycles. He said he started stealing motorcycles in 2001, after losing a job with a motorcycle company.

The easiest motorcycles to take, Laguardia said, are those whose ignition key wirings are exposed.

Laguardia said he sold the stolen motorcycles to buyers in Talisay City and Barangay Lorega, Cebu City at P6,000 for every motorcycle.

10 so far this year

During a tactical interrogation by Senior Insp. Michael Bastes, CIIB intelligence section chief, Laguardia reportedly claimed to have stolen 10 motorcycles since January this year. He stole six in Cebu City and four in Mandaue City.

SPO2 Pugoy lost his Yamaha DT motorcycle in April 2002 while it was parked near Freedom Park in Carbon Market.

Pugoy, who went to CIIB yesterday, said Laguardia was identified by a witness who frequently saw him roaming around the market.

Laguardia, however, said he could not longer remember taking a DT motorcycle in 2002. (JST)
