One ‘Baby’ tours among 81 thorns

A ROSE among 81 thorns.

In what could be a first in any road cycling competition, a lady rider will be riding against male counterparts in this year’s revival of the Omega Pain Killer Tour de Cebu, set to hit the roads on Oct. 10 in Mandaue City.

The esteemed lady biker, Baby Maritess Bitbit, will be racing in the five-leg tour donning the colors of Danao City.

A member of the national teams for road, track and mountainbike, Bibit, who is currently in Danao for mountainbike training, will race with other RP mountainbike team mainstays Niño Surban, March Aleonar, Kennedy Guinoo with Omie Rodriguez.

Other than Danao, confirming participation in the tour is Cebu Province team, which will have Albert Basirgo, Robert Villaver, Jovanni Delica, Nilo Barbalose, Antonio Nebria and Jaybop Pagnanawon.

Cebu City will be bannered by Adonis Bohol, Evic Largo, Elmer Navar-ro, Roy Romales, Johnny JAca and Lyndel Caraquel.

Also taking part in the race, which covers the whole of Cebu are teams Nueva Vizcaya, General Santos City, Davao City, Butuan City and Talisay City.

The sponsor of the event, International Pharmaceuticals Inc. shelled out some P200,000 for the cash prizes to be given to the riders, who will come up with impressive performances.

The team champion will get P30,000, while individual winners of the five stages will get P10,000 each. There will also be survivor prizes to be given to any rider who finishes race.

Cash prize will also be given to stage winners and for the winners of the special awarding of the mountain, sprint king and rookie of the year. (MCB)
