FROM 10 teams, the fledgling Visayas Amateur Athletic Association (VAAA) basketball tournament grows bigger following the entry of two more schools for the second season, which opens on Nov. 10 at the University of San Carlos Gym.
Newcomers Asian College of Technology (ACT) Cyber Knights and Don Bosco College Greywolves increase the events’ participants to 12.
School representatives and coaches gathered yesterday for an organizational meeting at the Yayoy’s Grill and Resto Bar, hosted by the league founder and Cebu City Councilor Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba.
The pioneering 10 teams, led by defending champions University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars and the Southwestern University Cobras, are expected to take their game to another level with the other schools, which were also present during the inaugural season last year.
USJ-R is bracketed in Group A with ACT Cyber Tigers, the returning Bohol Institute of Technology-International College, USC Warriors, Silliman University and Foundation University of Dumaguete City.
Group B is led by last year’s runner-up SWU Cobras, with the Salazar Colleges of Science and Institute of Technology Skyblazers, Asian College of Science and Technology Lightnings, Wester Leyte College of Ormoc City, Holy Name University of Tagbilaran City and the DBC Greywolves.
The teams will play a double round-robin, home-and-away elimination round and the top two seeds in each bracket will advance to the crossover semifinal round. The winners in the semifinal will play in a best-of-three championship series.
By summer, Alcoseba is planning to hold another tournament for collegiate varsity players to prepare them for the new basketball season next year. (RCM)
