Saturday, October 13, 2007 Talk back: Pacquiao does not deserve a gov’t. post By Ritchie D. Nolasco Banilad, Cebu City
THISE is a reaction to the letter of Jake Moralde, who said that boxer Manny Pacquiao should become a senator (Sun Star Cebu, Oct. 2, 2007).
While Pacman brought honor to our country with his boxing heroics, he does not deserve to be elected to public office because he has no leadership and lacks the education needed for a government post.
Thus, in his defeat in the last elections, it was the people who won.
Now let us analyze things a bit.
Celebrities like Michael Jordan, Sugar Ray Leonard and Larry Bird left their mark in the history of world sports.
Yet, long after they retired, did any of them bother to use their fame to win posts in government?
No. Because they know that politics will ruin them and were smart to accept that.
Unfortunately, Manny Pacquiao committed a grave error when he ran for a government post, which made me lose my respect for him.
The point is, when it comes to government, we need real leaders, whether they are traditional politicians or idealistic reformers.
Popular idols have no place in government.
Sorry Pacquiao fans.
I only want to see Pacman fight in the ring, not in the political arena.
And we should rid ourselves of the thinking that Filipino idols make great government leaders.
