More bets file papers on eve of deadline

PEOPLE from all walks of life, after deciding to run for various positions in the barangay and Sangunniang Kabataan (SK) elections, filed their certificates of candidacy at the office of the Commission on Elections yesterday.

One of them is former city councilor Eugenio Gabuya Jr., who filed his certificate of candidacy yesterday for barangay captain of Barangay Cogon-Pardo, Cebu City.

“My supporters urged me to run. It is their support that motivated me to decide to run,” said Gabuya, who is also a former barangay chief and former councilor for two terms.

With Gabuya were his supporters and SK candidates in the same barangay. They were wearing similar orange-and-yellow shirts.

Kring-Kring Catubay, who is vying for the position as SK chairperson, said that Gabuya’s political influence raised her party’s chances of winning.

The synchronized barangay and SK elections are set on Oct. 29, which has been declared a special non-working holiday.

The campaign period is from Oct. 19 to Oct. 27.

Candidates have until tonight to file their papers with the Commission on Elections.

TV news reporter Ramil Ayuman also filed his candidacy as barangay captain of Apas, Cebu City yesterday morning.

Mediamen

Happy with the support of incumbents like Apas Barangay Captain Clemente Rosales, he said that he is giving constituents an alternative.

“I’ve been endorsed by incumbents. This support prompted me to decide to run. In the process, I’m risking my job because if I will win, I can’t go back to my media work,” he said.

Other media workers who are in the list of candidates include print reporter Gary Lao for councilor of Barangay Tejero, Cebu City and Allan Majait of dySS for councilor of Barangay Apas, Cebu City.

More candidates

Former Theft and Robbery Section chief of Cebu City Police Office Benjamin Salvatierra, now retired, will also run as councilor for Barangay Parian, Cebu City.

Tessie Mercado of the Cebu City north district Comelec office said that she is expecting a lot of people to file their certificates of candidacies today, which is the deadline of the submission.

Bayan Muna Party-List Cebu provincial coordinator Arman Perez will submit today his candidacy as councilor for Barangay Mabolo, Cebu City

“The City recognized us as proactive citizens. I decided to be part of the mainstream government in order to be able to concretize policies for the people and slowly change and clean our corrupt system of government from the most basic government unit that is the barangay,” he said. (NRC)
